⇥ Quick note: moderation is now on
It appears that spammers have plenty of time on their hand; therefore, since neither CAPTCHAs nor moderation on old posts seem to deter them, I have turned on full moderation on this blog.
Moderation is, of course, not an excuse for censorship. I will not prevent messages from being posted unless they are completely off-topic or obviously spammy—there is a certain amount of personal judgment involved, clearly, but given that pretty much all the comments I filter out are about viagra, porn, shoes (seriously—shoes??) and so forth, I don’t think there will be a problem. To be clear: messages critical of my posts will not be moderated out under any circumstance, including obvious idiocy.

Have you considered honeypots instead of captchas? It doesn’t annoy the normal readers and so far I have good results with keeping out bots.
(a honeypot is a field in a form that is not required, and made invisible using a stylesheet. bots will ignore the stylesheet and think they will need to put something in there, so a simple statement will fend off bots: if (!empty($_POST["honeypot"])) echo “Hah, you must be a bot!”
Moderation is ok, and completely understandable.
Even filtering “obvious idiocy” would be ok: after all, nowadays everyone has a Blog, Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook and so on and so on, where he can put his idiocy in writing any way he/she wants.
In fact, with the Internet becoming saturated with people and opinions, as it is today, I’d say we should treat human-generated noise just as we treat spam.
Oh, feel free to censor this post, btw

Well, SSL International also own that other well known brand – Durex so (pun intended), if the shoe fits…
